Emergence Delft x Amarte

OPEN CALL: LOOKING FOR AN ARTIST!

Emergence Delft and Amarte are joining forces to launch an interdisciplinary open call for Platform Project 4, Material Science x Future Fabrics. We are looking for an artist with a fascination for textiles and innovative materials to collaborate with a Dream Team from Delft University of Technology consisting of students from different study backgrounds.

This collaboration offers a unique opportunity to explore new possibilities in textile design and material science while challenging existing traditions. We are seeking a maker who thrives on experimenting and co-creation, working at the intersection of art, science, and technology.

Who Are We Looking For?
This open call is aimed at artists who are interested in experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration. We are specifically looking for an artist with experience or strong affinity with textiles, material science, and wearable technologies. The ideal candidate has previous experience in working across disciplines and is comfortable in a team of students and researchers from various backgrounds. A collaborative mindset is essential, as this project values co-creation and experimentation, where the process is just as important as the final outcome.

Please note: The selected artist is expected to be available at least four days per week (9:00–17:15) on location in Delft throughout the duration of the project. Additionally, the artist must be fluent in English (Dutch is a plus).

What to Expect?
The selected artist will join the project from mid-April 2025 and will contribute their own research question or sub-theme to be explored with a team of 10 interdisciplinary students. The collaboration will continue until the end of June 2025, leading to the development and realization of a final installation or artifact.

This process is centered on co-creation and collective experimentation, where different perspectives and expertise come together. In the realization phase, the artist works alongside the team to shape the final tangible installation, integrating both artistic and technological insights. The first public presentation of the work will take place during the Emergence 4 final event on June 26, 2025, at the Onderzeebootloods in Rotterdam.

The artist plays not only an artistic role but also a facilitating role, leading workshops and guiding the team in creative thinking processes. This collaboration is built on shared responsibility and mutual inspiration—the artist is not a teacher or supervisor but an active participant in the research and creative process.

The selected artist will receive:

  • A stipend of €6,000 (including travel and other expenses)

  • Support and facilities (access to workspaces, possible laboratories, materials, and a multidisciplinary team)

  • Exhibition opportunities (presentation at Emergence 4 and potential external exhibitions)

  • Publication and documentation (the research process will be recorded in an open-source Public Knowledge Bank and documented through promotional and after-movies)

  • Networking opportunities (collaborations with TU Delft researchers and professionals in art, science, and technology)

  • Financial support (a budget to cover materials and resources)

Selection Process
A selection committee consisting of Amarte and Emergence Delft will shortlist several potential artists based on the submitted proposals. After this assessment, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview to further discuss their ideas and expectations. The final selection will be made in the first half of April. The selected artist will officially join the team in the week of April 14, following an introduction and research updates.

How to Apply?
Interested artists are invited to submit a proposal for the third exploration phase of the project. This proposal should outline a research question or thematic approach that can be further explored within the project. (For more details, see the document Emergence Delft x Amarte - Open Call - Planning and Method)

Applications can be submitted until March 16, 23:59. The selected artist will be announced in the first half of April. For more information or questions about the open call, please contact Britt Maes (b.maes@emergencedelft.nl).
